The Georgia factory the oldest Mill in the Athens area and possibly one of the first major textile factories in all of Georgia was established in 1830 and purchased by John R. White in 1837. The original building burned in 1892 and was replaced by the current structure. Whitehall Mills went bankrupt in 1929 and later became the Thomas textile company, a successful manufacturer of children’s clothing. Sales started to decline in the mid-80s and the factory closed in 1988. The buildings were converting into lofts and condos in 1997. The mill complex was listed on the national register of historic places in 2002. A left onto Greencrest drive and we are in the Green Acers neighborhood. Green Acres was established in 1955 by Franklin Builders on land previously owned by Patricia Monagham. Green Acres was created for family enjoyment. Spacious homes were built among tall trees and tasteful landscaping to create an atmosphere of privacy and greenery. Shaded sidewalks provided a safe area for children and strollers alike. Homeowners continue to maintain and improve the appearance of every street. Community spirit led to a unique swimming facility which now has one wading pool, two full-sized pools, shuffleboard, and basketball courts. Security patrol, garden club, community newspaper, and a baby-sitting co-op represent some of the ways that people help to create a community in which we take pride and enjoy.
